Big Mayo win at Connaught Community Games Table Tennis Finals
The finals of Connaught Community Games Table Tennis were held in Carrick on Shannon on Saturday 6th April. The boys from Castlebar went forward representing Mayo with great hopes of winning gold for the third year in a row and advancing to the Finals weekend in Athlone at the end of May. The age group is Under 13 and Castlebar was ably represented by Ultan O'Reilly, Daniel Viegas, Mark Dolan, Diarmuid McGrath and Luke Jordan, all pupils of St. Patrick's BNS and members of Manulla Table Tennis Club where they are coached by Kevin Devaney. There was a great attendance at the Marist Girls N.S., and the excitement kept on building as the first semifinal was won by Bunninaden, the Sligo champions who were very well supported on the day.

Castlebar met Claregalway, Co. Galway champions in their semi-final and showed great class in winning the tie 4-0 with great performances by Daniel, Ultan and Mark. Claregalway were very gracious in defeat and wished the boys well in the final against Bunninaden. The Sligo team got off to a great start with a super win by David Taylor against Daniel Viegas. Every set was very close but David prevailed. His win was countered by Ultan O'Reilly who won the next game which was also very close. David Taylor struck again against a tough Mark Dolan who is improving every time he plays in competition. The Sligo outfit lacked the strength in depth however to match the Castlebar outfit and though the matches were competitive Castlebar eventually won out 4-2. The boys are now looking forward to giving a good account of themselves in Athlone on Finals Weekend 1,
