Iraqi war affecting policing in Mayo
According to the headline report in the Mayo news the Gardaí manpower involved in the ongoing security operation at Shannon airport regarding US Military flights has left Gardaí resources in Mayo seriously depleted. Of a total police force of 200 Gardaí available for policing in Mayo almost 20% of them have been deployed in Shannon airport. In recent weeks fourteen officers and three sergeants have been redeployed to Shannon with no arrangements made for their replacement in Mayo.
Refusal of Cowley's Mulranney project.
Plans by independent TD for Mayo Jerry Cowley's Voluntary housing body to build 25 sheltered houses for the elderly in Mulranny on a site adjacent to The former Great Southern Hotel have been put under threat by Mayo County Councils expression of reservations about the proposed development. The county council's senior planner Mr Iain Douglas referred to a submission from the National Roads Authority on the project, which claimed that it had the potential to cause major traffic problems in the future.
Clarification re Westport anti War group and the St Patrick's Day parade
The Mayo News this week published two articles regarding reports in last weeks paper on the controversy over the Westport Against War movement's participation in the St Patrick's Day parade. An apology was made to Allergan Pharmaceuticals for wrongly portraying them in Liamy McNally's article. There is also a statement on behalf of the Westport Town Council clarifying the fact of the matter. It states that the group had their initial application turned down on the grounds that their presence might cause the focus of the parade to be diluted however the group were permitted to participate following further discussions.
