Looking Forward to the Weekend....

Ok, the rain pissed us off, we couldn't go anywhere and all the games were washed out. So? What are we going to do? Hopefully look forward to a mad weekend of sport in Mayo and elsewhere. There is action in Gaelic games, soccer, rugby and a lot of other stuff this coming weekend and none better than to start with that great game of....

Gaelic Games: The Draw on Monday last drew up few surprises(apart from the one that Mayo will face either Sligo or New York in the semi-final of the Connacht Championship, Oh that's not a surprise?) But for the footballers of Crossmolina it means nothing as they go out to retain the Connacht Club title that they won in 2000. This Happens on Sunday next with an away trip to Leitrim and Allen Gaels. Throw in is at 2.30. Closer to home the County junior Final Between Aughamore and Kilmeena takes Centre Stage. This game was washed out like so much else last weekend and will have the biggest crowd in the county. There are other Fixtures and for more details go to the County's website www.mayogaa.com

Soccer: like its Gaelic cousins, last weekend was very close to a washout. But managed to hold its own with a shock victory for Fahy Rovers over Manulla in the Connacht junior cup. Well next weekend sees round three of the FAI junior cup and there are six games for decision. they are:

Valley Rovers v Castlebar Celtic
Ballyheane v Glenhest Rovers
Westport United v Charlestown Ath
Ballina Town v Fahy Rovers
Ballina United v Straide & Foxford United
Crossmolina v Ballyvary Blue Bombers

Some crackers there I'm sure that you will agree. There are also games in the Connacht cup between Moyvilla and Drumnacool Rovers and also the clash of Dunmore town and Glenisland. Oh, and we cannot forget the game between Mayo and Sligo Rovers that takes place on Monday night either. With Oscar Traynor (the All Ireland of Inter county soccer) spots up for grabs, this could get interesting. The Ladies Cup Final Between Kiltimagh/Knock Utd and Gurteen Utd was also washed out last weekend so that maybe another fixture to keep your eye on. If you fancy watching the best in Ladies Soccer then keep your eyes peeled on local media for details.

Rugby: Last weekend gave us nothing on the Rugby Front bar Ballyhaunis's brave clash against Gort. This weekend a full fixture list is in operation with Castlebar Possibly having a week off. However Westport can stay top if they beat Sligo in Carrowholley. Sligo Promised a lot but slipped up against Castlebar and Creggs (a side written off by many, boy didn't they prove that wrong!), So obviously will want to sort out matters. Westport are playing the rugby of their lives at the moment and will be favourites. The other games feature Ballinrobe, currently unbeaten, up against NUIG. The students have one win to their credit but Ballinrobe are at home, this will be a corker. Finally in Group a Tuam host Creggs. Ballyhaunis have a mountain to climb in group B as they face current leaders Monivea. The other events feature OLBC (Galway) against Loughrea and Corrib against Dunmore. The All Ireland League for the senior teams is also underway and Ballina travel north to face Instonians. Ballina have one win out of one so will want to keep the pressure up.

So my friends there you have it, a busy weekend of sport for all fans who like to get out on a Saturday and Sunday. But it doesn't just stop there, God no! There is Basketball action over the weekend, Cross Country, Show Jumping, in fact the list is endless. This is just a taster. For more information stay tuned to Local radio and Newspapers for More details on all the action that takes place. And if you are in a club, then get in touch with www.castlebar.ie and get it out there. Have a good weekend!
