Are you aware that the Health and Safety Authority have set up a Good Neighbour Scheme to promote safety in the workplace. European Safety Week 2001 will be held in October. The focus this year is accident prevention. Every year 5,500 people are killed (69 people in Ireland in 2000) and 146 million days are lost due to work related accidents in Europe. Further details will be available closer to the date.

How will the new penalty points system affect your company drivers? This is an issue that Irish employers are going to have to look closely at before this system is enforced early next year. If for example a company driver incurs 12 points in a 3 year period, they cannot drive for the company for 6 months. What does the employer do in this instance? Do they supply alternative work? Are they entitled to full pay when there is no suitable alternative work? How much will this cost in the company in terms of lost revenue?
