The Year 2001

The year 2001 has been a truly magnificent one for Castlebar Athletic Club. Having had a few lean years medalwise over the last while, the Club had some major successes in the past twelve months at County,Provincial and National level. These triumphs have been in both individual and team events and are spread right across the juvenile age groups from U-8 to U-18.
No fewer than 35 All Ireland medals were won by Castlebar Club athletes at National competitions alone, not to mention Connaught and Mayo Championships.

The highlight of the Track & Field season was, without doubt, the performance of 13 year old Ann Nolan who won an All Ireland Gold medal in the Shot Putt, setting a new National record of 12.33 metres. In so doing, Ann beat the previous record by a full 2 metres and was called for trials for the National Team to represent Ireland in the 2002 A.A.A. Championships in Birmingham,England.

Schoolmates Sean Brophy and Thomas King both took Silver medals for 2nd place finishes in the U-12 600m and Ball Throw events, while Brendan Roache claimed a great 3rd place bronze in the U-17 Long Jump.

The youngest athletes in the club, 7 year olds Aoife Gavin, Sally Cunniffe, Shannon Garrett and Sally Rose Maughan, taking part in their first ever National competition, secured 3rd place in the U-8 Relay in Tullamore,Co Offaly and proudly took their place on the rostrum to accept their bronze medals to the delight of their doting parents.

Further bronze medals were to follow with" copycat"performances from the Boys U-10 and Girls U-11 Relay teams. The teams were Boys - Shane Moran, James McGauran, James Sweeney, David Gavin, Danny Kirby and Girls - Michelle Newcombe, Deirdre Doherty, Lisa McManamon, Kathryn Sullivan and Tara Gavin.

The Cross Country season which started in October proved every bit as successful. Ten year old David Gavin capped a marvellous first season with a fabulous individual 3rd place finish at U-10 level in Dungarvan,Co.Waterford.He also led home the Connaught team to 2nd place in the Regional section.

Sean Brophy proved he was a great all round athlete coming in 5th overall in the U-12 age group, in the process helping his Castlebar teamates, David Joyce, Donal Newcombe, Rory Martyn, Thomas King and Eamonn McNicholas to Silver medals and his Connaught colleagues to Bronze in the Club and Inter-Provincial sections respectively.
Two weeks later in the President's hometown of Rostrevor,Co.Down, debutant David Joyce finished a tremendous 7th overall at U-11 and picked up both an individual and Regional medal in the process. Further All Ireland Inter-Provincial medals were obtained by David Gavin (U-11), Noel Rice (U-13) and Rory Gavin (U13), due recognition for the enormous effort these athletes gave in training.
Overall this was a truely marvellous season for Castlebar A.C. and all members of the Club can be justifyably proud of the achievements.Congratulations, not only to the medal winners above but to all who represented the Club in any respect throughout the year.
