Instructions for Installing MS Word's Web Page Authoring (HTML) option

  1. We have noticed that, in some cases at least, the MS Word Web Page Authoring (HTML) tools have not been installed as standard at the Gateway factory.
  2. In order to be able to use the menu option: File, Save as HTML to produce web pages you must first install the HTML Web Page (HTML) authoring tools from the Office Professional Disk (this was delivered with the system and came in a brown cardboard pack.)
  3. First close any other applications you have running so that you just have the main Windows 95 screen displaying. Then place the Microsoft Office 97 CD-ROM in the CD-drive. Wait 5 seconds or so for it to engage and display the CD-ROM folder on screen. Expand this folder to full size so that you can see the Setup.exe icon near the bottom of the folder for (NB NOT Acmesetup.exe).
  4. Double click the Setup icon.
  5. Select the Add/Remove button when the installation screen appears.
  6. Select the Web Page Authoring (HTML) box by clicking in it. Do not click or select/deselect any of the other tick boxes. Click continue. The setup program will now install the necessary files automatically. Click OK at the final message stating that Microsoft Office has been successfully installed. Then close the setup folder.
  7. The next time you launch MS Word you will have the additional Web Page Authoring (HTML) tools installed on the File menu.
  8. You can then proceed to save web pages using the word menu options File, Save as HTML
  9. Once you have saved the file in HTML form you can preview it using the menu option File, Web Page Preview which automatically launches Internet Explorer. You can switch back to Word using alt tab or from the task bar which is usually at the bottom of the screen.

Try the Word Web page Templates

Note that if you start a new page in Word by selecting the options: File, New you will now have the option of using the default Web Page templates provided with the additional MS Word Web Page tools. You can use these to start and simply fill in the text in the appropriate spaces

Using Styles

Use the styles provided by Word (see window top left of screen - usually begins with the word 'normal' displayed. Pull this down and select the appropriate HTML style - H1, H2, etc., for the paragraph or heading you are currently writing or editing.
