About Mayo Historical & Archaeological Society Based in Castlebar, the society was reactivated in 1986 after a lapse of many years. Each year since then, the society has organised a series of very successful historical, archaeological and geographical lectures, which are held during the winter months, and these have attracted large audiences from all over the country. Since joining the society several of our members have successfully completed diploma courses in various third-level colleges. Others have made some valuable contributions to the understanding of Mayo's ancient culture, particularly in the field of archaeo-astronomy, fulachta fiadha research, early medieval burials and local history. In the summer months, trips are arranged to major historical and archaeological sites throughout the country. New members are always welcome.
