50th Anniversary of Margaret Burke Sheridan
Our school was very proud and honoured to be involved in the commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of Margaret Burke Sheridan, a past pupil of Scoil Naomh Aingeal. Margaret was a world famous opera singer who was born in Castlebar in 1889 and who attended St. Angela's School until she was 12.We had a lovely display in the front hall which included the roll book in which Margaret's name was written when she enrolled in the school in May 1893. Other memorabilia from the centenary celebrations of Margaret's birth held in 1989 were also on display. A beautiful exhibition based on Margaret's life was displayed in the Linenhall Centre in Castlebar and many classes from the school went to see it.
Below are some photos of the school display and memories of the visit to the exhibition.

Our Visit to the Linenhall
by Emma 4th class

Yesterday, the 17th of April the 2 fourth classes went to an exhibition in the linenhall about Margaret Burke Sheridan's life.
You could watch a video and look around and read things on display boards. There were 2 lovely dresses and a tiara worn by Margaret. There were 2 videos playing at the same time. One was showing all the letters she received and tickets from her concerts. The other was showing where she sang and pictures of her and her family. There was a room with a gramophone on a table and plastic cases with her records in them. There was a big wide dress called a kimono which everyone thought was very big but you wrap it around yourself and tie a big band over it.There was a picture of Margaret wearing it. The lady in the Linenhall told us that the kimono was presented to Margaret by a Japanese man. There was also a picture of her wearing the tiara. There was a picture of Margaret's family tree telling the names of her grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephew.Everyone enjoyed our visit to the exhibition.
