I was delighted to be one of the eight chosen to be a
captain in the senior school league run off this Autumn.
My team were Kerry and we were in group two along with
Mayo, Laois and Westmeath. Group one consisted of Tyrone,
Galway, Dublin and Armagh. After many tough matches
four teams emerged in the semi finals. Galway defeated
Armagh by three points in the first semi final in a
cracking encounter.
The second semi final was us and Tyrone. It was the
toughest match we played. A lot of people doubted Kerry.
I wasn't too sure if we were going to beat them myself.
It was very hard to hold off the Tyrone forwards and
even when we got the ball up the field it was difficult
to slip through the Tyrone defence. We managed to beat
the unstoppable Tyrone by a couple of scores. Meanwhile
the B final was contested by Westmeath and Laois. I
wasn't sure who would win this match because both teams
were very evenly matched but when the dust fell and

cleared Laois were triumphant. It was now down to the
one match that decided the winner. It was the A-final.
It was Kerry and Galway for the cup. We
Powered ahead half way through the first half but Galway
caught up and leveled the scores. Both teams fought
tooth for a nail through the first half. In the second
half the pressure mounted on both teams as the minutes
ticked on. Galway were beating us until we scored a
marvellous goal to put us in the lead. With five minutes
to go, the match was square. Galway scored a point with
two and a half minutes to go. We tried to catch up but
Galway scored another point. With seconds to go we tried
to score a goal but the final Whistle blew. Galway were
the champions.
We had come so close but yet so far. The captain of
Galway Michael Flynn accepted the cup on behalf of his
team who were the worthy winners. By Ryan Sheeran
