Comments: How's it going and best wishes to you all in Castlebar. We are in Portland, Oregon looking for the perfect pint of the black stuff for Paddy's Day - there's a rumor that there's a new Irish pub (with an actual rock imported from Blarney) being opened up the road from us - hope they get it finished on time!! If anyone knows anyone flying to Portland in the near future - we'd kill for a chunk of hairy Bacon... it's too late now for Paddy's day but it's always welcome here in the land where they don't know how to treat their Pigs!!! Have a great day.

Roger D. Gibbens
Seeking: GIBBENS family histroy
Details: The name Gibbens (Gibbons) was first seen in County Mayo, and came from the Gaelic "Mac Giobu'in" or son of Gilbert (de Burgh). Gilbert was a descendant of MacWilliam Iochtar of County Mayo, who in turn was a descendant of William Fitzadelm de Burgo, a Norman knight from Burgh in Suffolk, who invaded Ireland in 1171 AD. He succeeded Strongbow as Chief Governor of the Earldom of Ulster. William de Burgo also owned several tracts of land in Connacht, and his great-grandson was William Liath deBurgh. Any information from this point in history and forward would be greatly appreciated.

The aerial view and virtual walking tour map have been most helpful in planning my trip to this region of Ireland. I would be interested in watching any Irish sporting events during the first 2 weeks of March 1999. Do you have schedules, ticket prices, availability, etc. ? Thank you

Comments: DEAR ANN, FRANK & PATRICIA:
Hope all are well & having a happy Valentine's Day. We have been looking at the Castlebar web site, it is very interesting & well done. Carol & Brian are expecting their son in May. Their old house is not sold yet, but getting close. Love their new house, was bought from a family who moved back to county Mayo. Kevin is now in his own apartment, bought a new car & seems to be adjusting. Anna is in Brussels this Week. Jim's Mom moved in next door to us & is adjusting. My mom is in Nashville visiting my sister. We are heading for Nashville in 2 weeks & Las Vegas in April. We are hoping Rachael will Come to Chicago in May at the same time as Anna & Jan are visiting. ( should be interesting.) Drop us a note about everyone.

Suggested Webcam Location: I think the best place for a webcam would be either on Market Square near Dunnes Stores or close to McDonalds on the Distributor Road. This way people from around the world will be able to see the progressive, prosperous side of Castlebar.
I hope you will consider my suggestion.

Tom Townsend

I saw your pub's webpage tonight - very nice. It is really great to be able to access places far away from one's home at the touch of a button.

I was wondering if you give me some advice and possibly some help. From July 27 through August 4, the band that I am in here in America, the Common Taters, is leading a tour of the west coast Ireland from Dingle to Westport. I was hoping you could point me in the right direction regarding our band playing for a couple of hours in a couple of pubs. We are wanting to play one night in Dingletown and one in Galway city or the environs of Westport, Co. Mayo. We are willing to play for little money, wanting more to play for the experience of playing in Ireland. We think that the local people would like to hear an American band, as well as the people on our tour would like to see their tour leaders playing at a pub.

Our instrumentation includes guitar, mandolin, bodhran, whistles, bagpipes and of course singing including three part harmony. Our repetoire includes Irish folk favorites, sea chanties, modern Irish songs, rebel tunes and American rock and roll (played with acoustic instruments of course!). Let us know if there is any other information you would like regarding the Common Taters. We would deeply appreciate any advice or help in this matter. Cordially, I am,
Tom Townsend

Kevin Flynn
My name is Kevin Flynn and I am the vice-president of Napier University's International Students Association in Edinburgh, Scotland. I have been asked by one of our members to try to locate a friend who moved to Castlebar, four to five years ago. The persons name is Calum Maclean, all she knows about him is he got a job in Castlebar as an architect. It would be a great help if you could look him up for me possibly providing me with an address or phone number. Thanking you in advance for your time and help.
Yours Sincerely,
Kevin Flynn.

Subject: Enjoyed your page

Dear Chefs of Mayo
I found the Castlebar web page in a column in the February/March 1999 issue of Irish America. I could not resist clicking Chefs of Mayo.  I am a certified chef and chef instructor in Las Vegas, Nv.USA.  I also write a food column for the Las Vegas -Review Journal.  Culinary Corner

Anyhow,  I couldn't help but notice that we share many of the same problems.  The professional chefs organization here in the states is the American Culinary Federation.  They have a web page the address is    acfchefs.org  I think you will enjoy it. The Las Vegas Chapter is known as the Fraternity of Executive Chefs of Las Vegas.  If  you could send me a mailing address I would like to add your organization to our mailing list.

I am going to email you a couple of my columns for your enjoyment.  Please feel free to publish them in your news letter free of charge.

Sincerely,  Chef  Ed Kane
