Hello all in mighty Castlebar
I am an emmigrant from Castlebar. I left there 5 yrs ago to work in New York and have been enjoying myself ever since. .. I enjoy your site it is very good it is updated all the time. I am so happy that Castlebar is trying hard to get people in the Internet and e-commerce is playing such a role in this early stage. As I am now living in New York I cannot stress the importance of the Internet and e-commerce, you probably realise this already but I would like to let you know that America is striving ahead day by day and is really addressing the whole issue of the Internet.
CISCO LUCENT DELL INTEL MICROSOFT QUEST to name but a few are powering ahead all the time. Really what I am saying is stick with what you are doing and keep fighting on as it will eventually pay off.
Ii would like to take this opportunity to let you know that I would be glad to assist in any way as I am living here now I might be of use and can see the importance of e-commerce here in the states and what a difference it will make around the globe as the future unfolds.
Once again congratulations on your wonderful website and maybe I will hear from you soon bquigs@hotmail.com 7 Dec 1998

Subject: Well done for the great web-page.....
Greeting from New York City.
Well done on the fantastic web page. Its great to see so much stuff about the town being put out there for everyone to see.
It would, however, be nice to see some pictures of the town and the surrounding areas. Both for visitors, people who've never been there, and for those that don't to get back too often.
Nice one.
We are working on a much greater range of photos, etc. but in the meantime check out the dots on the Virtual Tour of Castlebar - lots of photos there.

Comments: I have just found you address and have recognised some of the contributors to your guest book.I am a year in London and currently work in Bank of America. I originate from Clooncundra, near Errew and I work in the bank with another local man Tom Mellett (Errew). I see Ciaran Deasy wrote to this guest book in August. Both Ciaran,Tom and I attended Errew school, so if Ciaran logs in again perhaps he can leave his email address and I will get in touch.I had previously found the webpage compiled by Pat Deese and was pleasantly surprised to find my grandfather's family history (Patrick Thomas) recorded in the Ballyhean records - very interesting!. An email directory would be lovely...will watch out for it in 1999. Merry Christmas.

Comments: Hi,
As a new visitor to the Castlebar Web Site, I would like to congratulate all involved in setting up and maintaining the site for a job well done! I have read some of the many messages posted from Castlebar natives and friends and was surprised some of the places that Castlebar people had settled in. Now that we have sites like this, the world really is a small place. Once again well done and I'll be a regular visitor.
Thanks Raymond - tell your friends - we always need more visitors!

Comments: Sunday morning 1st Nov 98, at 10.52 AM I started running the New York City Marathon on Statan Island, and I finished the Marathon 4 Hrs 20 Mins later. Take 4 Mins off that time that it took me to get to the starting line after the official start amid the throng of 32,000 marathoners. That leaves my time at 4 Hrs 16 Mins. About 2 Hrs earlier my friend, and group leader the famous Dick Hooper had finished in a very respectable time of 2.22 and 46 secs, in 34 th place overall, and he was awarded the 3rd prize in the Vets section.

Comments: I used to travel down to castlebar years ago, I first went there with the Air Corps on summer camp as an impressionable young chap. What an impression it left. The night in Stalkies? and the Humbert and another place that I think was called the Castle?, maybe not. I went out with a girl called Valerie for a while and used to go down most weekends to see her, (all together now, AHHH!), I went to a graduation dinner in Breaffy House and out to Pontoon after and then back to town for breakfast, nice night. I remember camping in a field out along Turlough Road in the spilling rain, and my friend passing out and resembling a "sack of spuds!". The best of times was had there in the Welcome Inn and the T.F. Ger Lavelle says hello to you all and who knows I might see some old friends and flames in the not to distant future. Bye for now, nice site. Bertie.

Comments: Jaysus - that brother of mine in London has the site taken up there!! Well I am back in Portland, Oregon getting ready for the skiing season. It looks like I will not be back in Castlebar for a few more months at least - I believe I am about to be invited to a wedding there. Anyway, I just got on-line at home - so anybody interested in dropping a line this way - I'd really appreciate it. Finally, congrats on a wonderful web page - it's great for us immigrants as a means of keeping in touch with what's happening around the place.
Thanks for the kind comments. We presume from what you say that Peter is your brother Vincent! We could do with a few more contributors like the Jordan Brothers!

hello

Mike McNulty Location of AGLASS - does it/did it exist????????
Can you please help?
My family history trail has taken me to a John McNulty, born in "Aglass, near Castlebar", according to his Army record.
This would have been around 1790. I am fast losing my sanity in poring over the local Ordnance Survey map.
Is the place known to you?
Just by the way, this is my first ever internet mail shot, if that is what this is called. Any response would be appreciated.
Many thanks Mike McNulty

comments: Well I finally found the bulletine board as per my posting below but then (and this I can see are certainly the problem for the lack of postings) I couldn't remember my password so I'm forced to post my reply here, which kinda defeats the purpose of the bulletin board.
Yep, there's certainly a problem locating this bulletin board. I've finally bookmarked it this time but if it's gonna be dumped that would be a shame. Please please replace it with something else (preferebly more accessible) and certainly I would agree with talking on board the constructive criticism of making the Castlebar hom page less cluttered. AND I do appreciate that it's easy for us to criticise when most of this work is still being done voluntary. I think some more money should go to this effort instead of providing cheap computers. That's my opinion anyway. Any one to argue with me? preferably someone who's making use of one of these new "cheap computers" The intention is to replace it an interactive system without any need for registration - the need to register, etc. has certainly has reduced the feedback so for the moment we have souped up the guestbook to give a slightly quicker turnaround.

comments: Re the Future of the Information Age: Do I detect just a bit of tongue in cheek with the expectation that Ennis' Website might be "something else". It seems somewhat incredible that 12 months after the award, Ennis has still to get it's act together on this. The same goes for Kilkenny, It was a very hard route to find a Kilkenny website. Congratulation Castlebar, you're far ahead of these two in terms of what you offer in your Castlebar domain. (In fact I'd say it's superior to Killarney too, but at least they have something in place)
What tongue in cheek? - never!

comments: Just another posting, following on on the one I placed on the bulletin board earlier, Surely there are easily 100 Castlebar connected e-mail addresses in Castlebar alone apart from all of us away from the place. Again, i have the fear, as echoed by others, that these cheap computers might turn out to be like puppies for Christmas. I hope I'm proved wrong so can all you Castlebar people on line get you names onto the e-mail listing so that in or through that at least we can start some discussion.

Have ye ever considered operating a computer cam to look out of the window from Ellison street. There are a lot of people around the world who love this. I know a pub in Fort Lauderdale used do it (Still do I imagine) called The Elbow Room (www.theelbowroom.com) Check it out. See what ye think.
Definitely on the agenda but it needs a continous link for the webcam to the Internet (local calls have to be paid for here in Ireland). When we get some money!

A Suggestion:
With regard to the "Contact relatives or friends in Castlebar", Have you thought about setting up an e-mail directory of Castlebar related e-mail addresses through an invitation on line. People would submit their e-mail address, Their name and whatever other details they wanted, to be contactable. Not only for Castlebar based people but people with an interest in Castlebar who wish to be contactable through the Castlebar directory.
I guess it would need to be sortable or arranged in alphabetical name order.
Just a thought!
Regards
Peter

Just a few more comments: Margaret Burke Sheridan was actually born in 1888 I think. Check Ann Chambers excellent book. She also says that La Sheridan was Puccinni's favourite (He said best) Mimi in La Boheme and that probably the most famous opera house in the world La Scala in Milan still houses mementoes of her (Which is sad when one considers that we have nothing really to commemorate her in Castlebar (But then she was undeniably something of a considerable Snob and never really wanted much to do with Castlebar after she left. Chambers in the book related a rather embarrassing incident when she returned to be expected to sing in the convent and refused.
Of course one shouldn't forget another great singer Delia Murphy either born in Roundfort not all that far from Castlebar. She was wife of the Irish ambassador to the Vatican city during the Second world war and in attempting to save many from the Nazis it is suspected is one of the heroes of the legend of the Scarlett Pimpernel

Keep up the good work. This is one of the best sites I have visited on the net.

Your site will bring Castlebar and Mayo people around the world into one big family. I realy enjoyed your guest page. No doubt many people with Castlebar roots throughout the globe will be reunited with there relatives and friends through your site.

Continued success to your promotion of Castlebar.

Tom
