Details: Seeking family or information on the family of John Scanlon of Carracastle, Bohola, County Mayo who married Bridget "Delia" Killeen from Lissatava, County Mayo on July 4th, 1928 in the Roundfort RC Church, County Mayo. Delia's sister, Winifred (who passed away circa 1953-54), married a Mahon(?) - they had a daughter who came to live with John and Delia upon Winifred's death. Winifred and Delia were both my great aunts -- their sister, Helen Cecelia Killeen (my grandmother) imigrated to the United States circa 1902, married William McNamara of Scranton PA. Details: In the Summer of 1946, I stayed in a cottag ein Mount Daisey with Mr. & Mrs. ? and their babydaughter. May & Newney lived on their farm 1mlaway. On a friday night we would sit by the turf fire and sing. Newny had a beautiful voice. In those days they went about with no shoes. We were only 11 & 12 years. On a sunday we would walk to church in Castlebar. There was a rail track close by. I'm from Liverpool.

Details: My great-grandfather, Patrick Higgins, was born in County Mayo in 1856. His parents were Patrick and Mary McDonald (McDonnell). He had a sister Margaret and perhaps a brother, Andrew. Patrick moved to Leeds, married, emigrated to Philadelphia. His sister Margaret also moved to Philadelphia and became a nun in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Some indications have led me to believe that Patrick was born in the Castlebar area. Thank you.

On my Grandmothers birth cert the mothers name is given as Nora Curley from Longford. My grandmother was placed in an orphanage in Middle Abbey Street in Dublin and was later fostered by a Ms. Barron of Collon Co. Louth. I have very little to go on, I would appreciate any information anybody might have. My Grandmother is in her 70's now so there is no hope of her parents being alive as they would be over 100 years old now, but Nora Curley may have married and had other children. Nora Curley was 30 years old when she gave birth to my Grandmother in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin.

Mary Purcell was born in Ireland, and later immigrated to the U.S. She became a nun and settled in Baltimore, MD. 4. John Purcell was born in Ireland and may have later moved to Australia. 5. James Purcell may have been widowed with one child when he immigrated to the U.S. (settled in Scranton, PA?)6. (My grandmother) Catherine Purcell was born on July 25, 1890 (some question as to the date?)in Bally Catle, Belderig, County Mayo, Ireland. She married Patrick Joseph Regan (from County Roscommon) in St. Louis, MO. She died on November 4, 1968, in St. Louis, MO. 7. Julia Purcell immigrated to the U.S. and eventually settled in St. Louis. She returned to Ireland frequently and may never have become a U.S. citizen. She died on April 22 or 23, 1975. 8. Bridgette Purcell was born in Ireland and lived in Dublin. She married a man named McEvoy and had at least two children. a. (Male) McEvoy may be still living in Ireland. b. Catherine McEvoy married Hugh Mulrooney from Dublin, Ireland. Hugh taught at the University in Dublin. Catherine is deceased. Catherine McEvoy Mulrooney had 3-4 daughters born in the 1970's: One is a doctor (Galway?). One in London. One in Wales.(9) One other child. baby? born in Ireland. No other information known.

Details: We are looking for relatives that may possibly still be in the Castlebar area. Our great-grandparents were Martin and Bridget Moran (nee Murray) who left Ireland in 1864. They settled in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Martin was originally from Achill Island, and Bridget was from Castlebar. We have heard that they buried a young son (John?) before leaving for the States. Presumably, Bridget had brothers and sisters (Murray) who did not emigrate. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Details: Hello, my name is Terri Smith. I am researching my family's history and I'm having some trouble. My mother told me that her cousin or second cousin (Ellen Smith-nee Hawkes, nee Shiels) parents were Abraham Smith m. Margaret Stranger. But, I have talked to Gladys (Ellen's daughter) and she has informed me that this is not so. Gladys says that Ellen's parents were Irvin Smith m. Mable Carson. Unfortunately, I don't know Irvin's or Mable's parents names or if Irvin and Mable were born in County Mayo. I don't know if these people were born in Ireland or if their parents were or even who their parents were? Irvin Smith m. Mable Carson, where(?), did they immigrate to Canada? Or did their parent's immigrate from Ireland to Canada? They had 4 children Frank, Ellen, Lorne, and Jane. Ellen was my mother's cousin or second cousin. My mother's family and Ellen lived in Manitoba, Canada. Ellen also lived in Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada and maybe Moose Jaw also in Canada. Ellen m. Fred Hawkes then were divorced. Then Ellen m.Jack Shiels in Zehner Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada. My mother said that Ellen's parents were Abraham Smith m. Margaret Stranger and had 3? children Mary m. Samuel Easter, Wilfred moved to North West Territories, Canada, and Ellen m. Hawkes & Shiels. I don't know how my mother could be so wrong or if she just forgot who Ellen's parents really were but, I hope to find the connection to Ellen's roots in County Mayo. Ireland. Somehow, Ellen is connected to a family from there? If this sounds familiar please respond Nevertheless, Gladys says that Ellen Smith's family can be traced to County Mayo. Please if anyone has any information I would appreciate any assistance, thank you.

McCrary and settled in Georgia. Another brother James stayed in Co. Mayo in the townland of Errew. Details: My g g g grandfather was David McNamara. He was born in 1770 and left Ireland in 1784. I am looking for a ships list for this year but can't seem to find one. As he was only 14 at the time I assume he travelled with parents or older siblings. His place of birth is only listed as Clare I. which we also assume to be Clare Island, as the family was always told they originally came from County Mayo. The story told is that they were Church of Ireland and landowners, but left because of some difficulties regarding siding with Catholic neighbours and friends, and the treatment they were receiving at the hands of the British. We do know that David first went to Boston, Mass. U.S.A. and stayed there until 1790, when he came to Nova Scotia, Canada. The records from his entry into Canada until present are plentiful, but before that he is the most elusive man.

Bridget married a Mailey and by 1881, was a widow with two children, Sairey Mailey and Mary Ellen Mailey. Catherine married Alexander Gallacher, and by 1881 had two children Mary Ann Gallacher and Margaret Gallacher. Details: Looking for descendants of Michael and Ann (McDermott) Prendergast, (my ggparents) who raised 11 children in the gatekeepers house near or in Castlebar. Buddy Prendergast was Michael's sister, and she also lived in the area until the 1950's. Mary and Michael had eleven children, many of whom emigrated to the USA in the early to mid 1920's. Paddy Prendergast, the youngest of the eleven, lived in the Castlebar area until the approx 1980's. If you are related, I would love to correspond. My grandmother, Elizabeth was born in 1900. Her sister, Sara, lived in the County Mayo area. I believe her married name was Grimes- could be wrong. Sara had two daughters, Anne and Mary.

Details: My gg-grandfather's name was Patrick Aloysius Dennison, his only son, my g-grandfather, had the same name. His wife's name was Catherine Langley, their daughters were named Maria and Brigid. Apparently they were from Balla Parish and they emigrated to USA around 1860. In USA the two men worked for the B&O RR in West Virginia. The surname of Dennison does not seem to be very common. If anyone knows anyone who may be related to them, of any Dennison's residing in County Mayo, or a way to contact the Priest from Balla Parish, I would be interested in hearing from them. I do not have the funds to invest in a professional genealogical search. Any leads or other assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Details: I am trying to trace my auntie's family. Her name was Margaret Roche and she was born 13th. may 1919 in Ballynastoka Ballyhaunis Co. Mayo. Southern Ireland. She came to Surrey England around the year 1949 with her sister. She had 1 sister and 3 brothers. I belive she married in late 50's or early 60's to Joseph David Lennon. They lived at 20 Browning Avenue, Worcester Park. Sutton. Surrey. Sadly Margaret Lennon died in August 1976 at home. I believe that the family stayed at that address until 1989. I do not know if Joseph Lennon is still living or not. I have discovered that they had 3 children, Marie, Christine, and Ilene. Ilene would now be about 40 years of age and the other 2 girls would be a bit older. These 3 girls are my 1st. cousins so I would dearly love to trace them. I also believe that they had a son who was younger but died several years ago. He was a Down Syndrome child. If anyone knows of their whereabouts or married names I would be so very grateful, as these girls do not even know that I exist.

Details: Further info to add too my recent entry. Ellen Moran married to Thomas O'Malley had five children. Possibly all born in England. John (who emigrated to Canada early this century and whose family I am aware of), Thomas who I knew, Patrick (known as James) who was my grandfather, Peter who enlisted at 17, and was killed in the first world war, Mary Ellen who died of diptheria when young. They changed their name to Melia when they came to England. I think Ellen my g-grandmother had a sister called Rose. My mother remembers her writing to someone called Rose in her home town. My great grandmother (born Ellen Moran) died in 1938. Her shawl caught fire while she was trying to light a cigarette or pipe from the fire. She died as a result of her burns. Any body remember her? Please refer to previous entry. Ellen Moran married Thomas Michael O'Malley, (could be Michael Thomas and it could be spelt O'Mally.)

Details: This is probably looking for a needle in the proverbial haystack, but I am looking for my great-grandparents who were born in County Mayo, Ireland. The problem is, that I do not know where. My grandfather's name was Thomas and he was born in 1838. His wife, Ann was born in 1840. They emigrated to America, with their son Edward Francis. I have been told he was approximately eight years old. They probably emigrated to Philadelphia, then moved to Shamokin, Pennsylvania.
