230 jobs to go in Castlebar
Volex, situated on the Breaffy Road is to lose 230 workers over the next month. This comes after the company laid off some temporary workers last April, which was blamed on the downturn in the telecommunications market. Volex manufactures electrical cable assemblies for telecommunication companies like Nokia, Ericsson and Nortel. 250 workers will remain in the British-owned Volex and the Castlebar branch is now to become the European Headquarters for Infocom and for power products. The announcement was made on Monday by Managing Director Mr. John Corcoran.

Three Mayo Urban Boundaries Extended
The boundaries for Castlebar, Westport and Ballina have been extended finally. The Ballina area now has a total of 3,300 acres. It was extended by 2,300 acres and this increased the population from 7,500 to 10,000. Westport was extended so the town boundaries would now include Roman Island, which will not increase the population by much, but the Town Council will now have control over that area. The Castlebar boundaries have been extended by 1,882 acres, increasing the population by an estimated 2005 persons. The new Castlebar and Ballina population figures may not be entirely accurate as they are based on a census figures for 1966 and they do not include new developments.

Bus Eireann rejects "ramshackle" allegations
Allegations made by Deputy Jim Higgins T.D. that school buses operated by Bus Éireann are "ramshackle" have been rejected by Bus Éireann. They said that all buses including school buses undergo annual roadworthiness tests carried out by the Department of the Environment. Buses are also examined every six weeks by Bus Éireann officials. Some 120 school buses have also been replaced during the last year but the company mentioned that the "present level of funding does not provide for the purchase of new school buses." Bus Éireann currently brings up to 150,000 children to and from school every day on over 6,000 routes.
