Castlebar Swimming Club hosted the Connacht Region Swimming Annual General Meeting ’04 which was held in The Traveller’s Friend Hotel & Theatre, Castlebar on Thursday 25th March.

There was a large crowd in attendance, with representatives from Athlone, Ballina, Ballinasloe, Claremorris, Laser S/C, Galway, Roscommon, Shark S/C, Sligo, Tuam , Westport and Castlebar.

Reports were given by the secretary, treasurer, P.R.O., swimming secretary, water polo officer and education officer and all who helped in any way during the past year were thanked and there was a special word of thanks to Marion McNally, Longford (outgoing president) for a job well done and for her commitment and dedication to Connacht swimming during the year.

Marion McNally (outgoing president), in her address, talked about the success of swimming during the past year and most especially the recent International Schools Gala which was held in Wales last weekend. Fifteen swimmers from Connacht qualified for the team and we can claim Cian Holland, Castlebar, who moved to a Dublin school last September. This is our biggest representation to date and more than any other province and from this John Egan and David Kelly (both Galway) took gold in their individual events.

Marion expressed sympathy to Tom Cosgrove, Claremorris on the recent death of his wife, Josie, all present wished to be associated with this expression of sympathy.

Marion then welcomed incoming president, Marian English, Castlebar and wished her well.

Marian English was congratulated and welcomed by all the clubs.
Marian has been involved in swimming, in administration and coaching, with Castlebar for approximately fifteen years and is currently serving on the Child Welfare Committee at National level.

On presentation to Marian, of the Cranny Memorial Shield, Col. Pat Begley, secretary, pointed out that the shield was designed and produced in 1976 by Bertie Kelly, an army cadet, who is actually a cousin of The Wiseman Family from Cork who relocated to Castlebar and are current members of Castlebar Swimming Club.
