€5million recycling plant sanctioned for Mayo
Mayo is to receive a waste recovery/transfer plant which will be situated in Gortnafolla in Turlough. The plant will be operated by McGrath Industrial Waste. Strict conditions have been put in place by the EPA and Mayo County Council as regards the operation of the plant; these conditions will include the careful monitoring of groundwater, surface water, landfill gas, noise, dust, storm water and waste water emission. The maximum waste that can be processed at the plant will be 60,800 tonnes in the first year and this figure will increase to 95,000 tonnes in the third year of operation.

Eighty new jobs announced for Castlebar
80 new jobs are to be created in Castlebar with the building of the European Headquarters of Fort Wayne Metals Research Products Corporation. The US company makes various products such as cardiac rhythm management products, guide wires and catheters. The Castlebar branch will be situated on the Breaffy Road. The announcement will boost local economy again after the recent cutbacks suffered in Castlebar.

Mixed reaction to sheltered housing project
The subject of a sheltered housing scheme for returning emigrants has risen again. The National Repatriation Association of Ireland is looking to build housing behind Springfield estate. The scheme was approved by the town council but rejected in an appeal in the High Court. The association already has houses in Mulranny and now they would like to extend the number of houses available to elderly returning emigrants.
