Frank Durcan to run in General Election?
Frank Durcan, a Castlebar councillor, is considering declaring himself as a candidate for the upcoming general election. If he decides to run as a candidate he would base his campaign on tackling issues like the break-down of law and order, corruption and planning. Mr. Durcan was a Fine Gael councillor in the mid-80s and he also stood as an Independent in the late '80s. Should Frank Durcan decide to run it would send shock waves throughout the Mayo Constituency.

St. Anthony's Special School gets Green Light
An announcement has been made that St. Anthony's Special School is to receive five new classrooms. Beverley Cooper-Flynn, a Castlebar TD, was proud to make the announcement. She said that she had spoken to Minister for Education and Science, Michael Woods, several times regarding the replacement of the existing St. Anthony's School and that finally he has given the go-ahead.

Drop-In Service for Mayo Students
Young people in Castlebar now have a place to go to receive help with school projects, meet others of their age, or discuss things they may be worried about. The Drop-In Centre is situated in Newtown, Castlebar, and is run by Foróige, the National Youth Development Organisation. The Centre was opened in November 2000 and they have a number of students "Dropping-In" every day from ages 12 to 25. The Centre welcomes any students who need help or advice with something or just want to chat and the service is totally confidential.
