Mayo had third-lowest turnout for referendum
Donegal had the only two constituencies that had lower turnouts than Mayo for last week's referendum on abortion. 35.2% of Mayo voters came out to vote. The country's national turnout was 45.89%, 7% more than Mayo's turnout. For the majority of Mayo voters the result was disappointing anyway and they mightn't have bothered. The final result was a "No" vote, however Mayo was in favour of the proposed change to the constitution.

Broadband funding for four Mayo towns
Castlebar, Claremorris, Ballina and Westport have been chosen for funding for a broadband network project that will be completed within three years. The project will be overseen by a team of consultants who are in charge of the €160 million project. Mayo County Council had planned to get all the major towns in Mayo connected by broadband within two years. While this project will not quite do that it will definitely help.
