Clare Island to get new €10 million Pier

This long awaited project was announced by the Minister of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and Islands, Mary Coughlan when she visited the island last week. The new pier will at the very least provide adequate access so that people can safely arrive and depart the island, so that unnecessary hazards are elinated for fishermen and ferry operators. The new pier project will also bring about improvements at Roonagh and Inisturk with a commitment of about €3.5 million for Inisturk.

Mayo Hotel Industry forecasts a sunny outlook for tourism.

Over 400 hotel and guesthouse owners attended the 64th Annual Conference and AGM of the Irish Hotels Federation which took place in the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport, last week. The title of the conference was Excellence in Changing Times. It was the first opportunity for hoteliers to come together since the Foot and Mouth crisis and the events of Sept 11th, which have greatly affected tourism in Ireland. Some of the issues discussed were waste management, air access to knock airport, human resources and the price of insurance.
