CCTV to tackle Castlebar crime
Justice Minister John O’Donoghue has announced that a Garda Closed Circuit TV monitoring system is to be installed in Castlebar in 2003. Because of the growing level of public order offences local business interests have been campaigning for years for the camera network which they believe would greatly reduce street crime. In February the Castlebar CCTV Committee was formed to further the move, it was initially setup by the Castlebar Chamber of Commerce.
Mayo Students win All-Ireland Public-Speaking Title
Three students from St Patrick’s Academy, Islandeady, have won the prestigious Mental Health Ireland National Public Speaking title. The final took place in the Edmund Burke Theatre in Trinity College, Dublin. There was a near-capacity crowd and the event was described as “magnificent” by Colm Keane, RTE Producer-Writer. The three member team – consisting of brother and sister, Hama and Mandi Munikwa and Bridie Kearns put in a powerful performance which excited the large audience.
Cashpoints for three Mayo towns but none for Louisburgh
Bank of Ireland has applied to Mayo County Council for planning permission to provide cash dispensers in Foxford, Balla and Crossmolina. In Louisburgh, however, there is a distinct feeling of disappointment that the town is not on the Bank of Ireland list. The town is currently serviced by a mobile bank that appears for two hours in the morning from June to September, but for nine months of the year there are no banking facilities. A recent survey confirmed the need for an ATM in Louisburgh.
