RTE is currently running Monday nights at 9.30 pm & repeated on Saturday nights at 11.00pm the highly acclaimed drama "Hide & Seek". Recorded by Clare Productions for RTE, this drama recounts the difficulties faced by Paul Holden played by Michael McElhatton ("Spin The Bottle", "Fergus’s Wedding") as he comes to terms with a terrible childhood tragedy in which he witnessed the drowning of his older brother.

The story line moves from Dublin to Mayo as his wife played by Maria Doyle Kennedy ("The General", "The Commitments") desperately seeks her husband who she believes is too unstable to care for their 10 year old son whom he has taken to Mayo without her consent.

While this major RTE drama has delivered quality acting & dramatic camera scenes, it also required some local actors as extras to complete the high standard of production. Castlebar’s own Donna Ruane who directed Castlebar Pantomimes "Sinbad" & more recently received great acclaim for her direction of "A Drama Tribute to Ray Leonard" in Claremorris, was approached by Clare Productions Mayo Director Liz Gill to forward actors from her youth drama group "Do You Play House". Initially Liz Gill was only interested in one actor, but such was the high standard of acting presented, that both Thomas Jennings & Katie McLoughlin both from Castlebar, were chosen to deliver lines within the drama. Watch out for the ferry scene on Saturday when Katie McLoughlin is asked for a mobile phone by Tito Long who plays the Holden’s 10 year old son & for Thomas Jennings who inquires as to her new boyfriend!

While the drama portrays Paul Holden’s family home as being on Clare Island, the scenes were actually shot from Mulranney & the Derreens pier in Achill. "Hide & Seek" became affectionately known as "Hide & Sick" by the total of 25 adult & teenage actors chosen by Donna Ruane as extras. This was due to the speed the ferry "The Island Princess" had to travel through very rough seas in order to capture the stunning views of Croagh Patrick & Clare Island required for the drama. Despite losing their sea legs, the two day venture into the world of television was much enjoyed by the Castlebar extras as the cast & crew of Clare Productions treated them with all the respect given to the more established actors. So watch out for the ferry scene on Saturday & you could see Katie McLoughlin, Thomas Jennings, Elenor Grier-Gavin, Angela Nevin (Newport), Sally Rooney, Ellen Cahill, Sinead Murray, Grainne Moran, Saoirse Walsh, Orla Gallagher, Sean Tobin. Clodagh Leonard, Terry O’Hara, Darren Fahey, Richard Keaney, Donna Ruane, Karen Conway, Mairead Coughlin, Walter Donohue, Martin O’Malley, Antoinette Starken, Frank Herraghty, Eamon Smith & Ken Armstrong as some cold, windswept but happy local faces as extras in "Hide & Seek."

If you missed it the first time round it undoubtedly will be shown again in the not too distant future.
