Tributes pour in as "The Shoe" is laid to rest.
Willie "The Shoe" McNeely meant so much to so many. He was one of the best known voices of sport in the West and a friend to many. The tributes poured in to the Connaught Telegraph after the sad news last Wednesday of his death. Willie The Shoe was the voice of sport on MNWR, sports journalist for the Connaught Telegraph and he also had his own website www.willietheshoe.com. Last Friday he was laid to rest after a long battle with cancer. He was a source of hope for many in similar situations. Here are some quotes from the many tributes that filled pages of the Connaught Telegraph.

"I certainly will never forget this man who held the world in his hands, and shared as much of it as he could with others." ~ Angelina McHugh, friend and colleague

"Willie was the shining light of MidWest Radio, and his voice lit the lives of all listeners on many a depressing Sunday afternoon when their favourite team lost." ~ Kenneth Gannon, fixtures secretary for the Mayo Schoolboys and youths A.F.L.

"He promoted and supported the cause of Mayo teams in all sports whenever the opportunity arose. He brightened up the lives of everyone, and made every individual feel important." ~ The Mayo Association Football League.

"Like his radio commentary, Willie was equally enthusiastic about everything he undertook in life. This enthusiasm was infectious." ~ 21st century web design

"At the end of the day there was no one bigger or better than "the shoe" to us all". ~ Mayo Ladies GAA

"The Shoe was an exceptional man. He brought great pleasure to many and I am sure that down through the years he lifted many when they were down and out." ~ Aiden Henry, columnist for the Connaught Telegraph.

"In a short few years "the shoe" became a legend" ~ Mick Byrne

"To everyone who knew him or listened to him, his life was a great gift. He was a breath of fresh air." ~ Teresa O'Malley, Head of News, Mid West Radio.

"The Shoe left some very deep imprints on the shifting sands of broadcasting, both at local, provincial level and national level." ~ John Melvin

No Threat from gas pipeline blasting
By-laws have been adopted to allow for the loading of explosives at Ballyglass pier. The explosives will be used in the building of the Corrib gas pipeline. Beverley Cooper-Flynn has said that the public needs to know more about the use of the explosives so that they can be assured in the matter. Mr. Martin Keating from Mayo County Council has said that no explosives will be stored in the area. On days that the explosives will be used they will be delivered that morning. Mr. Des Mahon, County Manager said that the explosives that will be used are inert and cannot be detonated without a specific detonator that will be transported separately. The operation will be carried out with extreme care and an explosive officer will be appointed. Fire fighting equipment will be available at the loading and unloading of the explosives.

Anger over derelict Castlebar building
Castlebar Town Council are angered over the former Bolgers premises. The building, now owned by Dunnes Stores, has been derelict for the previous few years and is an eyesore. Representatives from Dunnes Stores told the Town Council last November that a convenience store would be set up in the building and they would have better plans in six months, but six months have come and gone and there has been no sign of any plans. Mr. Ray Norton, Acting Town Manager told the representatives that something needed to be done urgently with the premises as it is damaging business in the area.
