Work begins on Castlebar Courthouse
Work on the Castlebar Courthouse got under way this week. Sections of the courthouse were declared unsafe five years ago and a few months ago the staffs of the High and Circuit Courts have moved from the courthouse to temporary accommodation. Two new courtrooms and new offices will be added along with the existing two courtrooms. The columns on the front of the building will remain though. The courthouse is one of the oldest buildings in Castlebar. It was built in 1830. The refurbishment of the courthouse is expected to be finished by the end of 2003. The total cost of the renovations will be between €6 million and €8 million.

New Haven for Irish-language enthusiasts opens in Castlebar.
New offices for Conradh na Gaelige were officially opened last week beside the Ulster bank on Ellison Street. The offices employ two full-time workers and provide a number of services. They give support to the Gaelteacht areas in Mayo and promote the use of the Irish language in Mayo. They will hold summer camps for children and teenagers up to fifteen years of age. During the year there will be Irish classes for all age groups and sports days for clubs and Irish schools in Mayo.
