Bad weather threatening Bellacorick power station
The power station in Bellacorick is facing serious times if the weather does not get better. The station runs on milled peat and if the wet weather continues its supplies may run out. The harvesting of the peat bogs has not started yet due to the bad weather leaving the bogs in bad condition. The requirement of peat would be 350,000 tonnes because the stock levels are very low at the moment. This has been the worst start to the season for the station since 1958. The situation could improve if the weather picks up but otherwise the power station will be in a very serious position.

Pedestrianisation may ease Ballina traffic crux
An initial plan for the pedestrianisation of Ballina's main streets has been drawn up. This plan will hopefully solve some of Ballina's major traffic problems. The pedestrian plan involves O'Rahilly St., Pearse St., and Tone St. being pedestrianised as well as the Market Square area, which will be revamped. There will also be a multi-storey car park, cycle lanes and a Safe Schools Programme included in the plan. The Town Council was pleased with the initial plan but is wary of the fact that it overlooks one or two of the traffic problem areas in the town.

Greatest success in a decade for athletes
The Mayo finals for the Community Games were held in Claremorris last weekend and Castlebar athletes did better than they had in a decade. Altogether Castlebar athletes won seven individual gold medals and a set of gold medals in the relay. The young athletes won medals for the following events: boys under 14 relay, boys under 8 80metre race, girls under 10 100metre sprint, girls under 12 100metre sprint, boys 600metre race, boys under 14 long jump, boys shot putt and boys under 16 high jump. The boys under 12-relay team won second place, the girls under 14-relay team were fourth and in the boys under 14 80metre-hurdle race Castlebar came third.
