Westport has its Special Day in the Sun
The President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, and her husband Martin were in Westport on Sunday as part of the celebration to mark Westport’s winning of the 2001 tidy towns competition. Mrs. McAleese described Westport as “the most beautiful town in Ireland” as she unveiled a plaque to commemorate the Tidy Towns Competition victory. She paid tribute to the Westport Tidy Towns Committee, Westport Town Council, Mayo County Council and all the groups and individuals who had contributed so much to win the competition for Westport. The Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Cllr. Ollie Gannon, said that her presence was much appreciated by all involved in the Tidy Towns effort.

Battle of old and new for Mayo radio licence
The oral hearing into the future holder of the Mayo FM Radio Licence was held in the Great Southern Hotel, Galway, on Monday with Mid-West Radio defending its standing as the local licence holder against the new applicant, Coast FM. The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland members heard submissions from the parties behind both stations in their quest to decide on who the license holders should be for the coming years. The Coast FM consortium said that they planned to provide a station that was more in tune with younger listeners and that they would split frequencies during broadcasting hours to provide different programmes for young and old listeners at the same time. There would also be programmes from the Mayo Gaeltacht five nights. Chairperson of the Coast FM board of directors, Mr. Aidan Crowley, told the broadcasting chiefs that the proposed station would bring a fresh voice to Mayo and would reflect a younger audience, something which Mid-West admitted to not doing. The Broadcasting Commission is expected to make its decision on September 2nd.
