Town river to be developed
The officials of Castlebar Town Council are in discussions with the Tidy Towns Committee concerning the cleaning up of the town river. Consultants are currently drawing up plans for the development of the river in the town. The river is in a disgraceful condition compared to other town rivers. Westport river has a road on each side and is well lit up at all times, whereas Castlebar’s river is sheltered most of the way and is being used as a dump.

Appointed to European Movement
Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny has been appointed Vice-President of the European Movement, Ireland. The European Movement is an independent membership organisation, founded in 1954, with corporate and individual members from all sectors of society. Enda Kenny said that he is pleased with his appointment and looks forward to examining more closely various European issues as they affect communities of Mayo and the West of Ireland as a whole.

Call to have caravans removed
North Mayo Cllr. Paul Conmy has called for immediate action to be taken to remove the caravans that are parked in the vicinity of Easkey Castle. He said it was not a public parking area and the authorities should ensure that it does not become one. The Cllr. has also contacted the County Dog Warden and asked him to visit the area to make sure the law was being fully complied with in relation to dogs.

Funding for Belmullet fibre optic service
A total of 164,000 Euro has been allocated for the provision of fibre optic cable to service the industrial estate in Belmullet. Half of the allocation is coming from Udaras na Gaeltachta and CLAR and it has being hailed as potentially the greatest breakthrough ever for the provision of jobs in the area.
