Rainy Reek Sunday keeps climbers away
A total of 20,000 climbers climbed Croagh Patrick over Saturday and Sunday. This is low compared to other years. Poor weather conditions have been blamed for the decrease in climbers. Many climbed during the day instead of the traditional early morning climb, hoping that the thick fog would disappear. This year there was a decrease in casualties on the mountain. There was a total of 6 injuries, no serious incidents, compared to at least 10 or 12 in other years.

Castlebar Fire Fighters organise Charity Car Wash this Saturday
Castlebar Fire Fighters are organising a Charity Car Wash at Castlebar Fire station this Saturday, August 3rd, to raise funds for local charities. It starts at 10 am and finishes at 6 pm. There will be a number of activities for all the family.

Lives saved in Westport Quay Drama
The emergency began last Monday evening when Mary Collins, Golf Course Road, Westport and her 3-year-old daughter Teresa and 1-year-old son Liam, who were both in a buggy, ended up in the sea near the Boat Club. The alarm was raised by a local plumber, John Walsh, and the three were retrieved from the water by Westport United soccer players, Mary Gill, Helen Mulhall and Ann Heraty and were revived shortly afterwards by members of the Order of Malta. They were then taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where the doctors and nurses battled frantically to save the young boy’s life. He has since being transferred to Crumlin Children’s Hospital.
