An Taisce Demand Legal action on convent demolition
An Taisce, the National Trust for Ireland, has requested Castlebar Town Council to take legal action against those responsible for demolition of the former Convent of Mercy in the town. The authority is seeking the current status of the site ‘with regards to the scheduling of the building as protected structures under the Planning and Development Act 2000’. Mr Ray Norton, town manager said they had no comment at this time.

Mayo’s €20m. education bombshell
Educational facilities (in the region of €20 million) earmarked for Mayo, have been put on hold. The proposals include a new second level school at Newport; a sports hall at Davitt College in Castlebar; an extension to St. Patrick’s College in Lacken Cross, two buildings at St. Brendan’s College Belmullet and a Sports facility at McHale college, Achill. Mr Langan the CEO of Mayo Vocational Education Committee said “we need to meet the Minister for Education to ensure we get some movement on our plans. They are being held up at the paperwork stage.

Mayo ladies return to rapturous reception
The Mayo ladies senior team magnificent achievement in beating Monaghan in the All-Ireland final in Croke Park on Sunday last was endorsed by the huge welcome home they received on Monday night last. Supporters from every corner of the county came in their thousands to Claremorris to give their heroes the welcome home they so richly deserved.
