Scandal of West’s Breast Cancer Care
An MRBI opinion poll commissioned by The Western People on breast cancer care treatment in the West of Ireland revealed that 68% of the population of Co. Mayo regard the treatment as poor or very poor. Dr Jerry Cowley, TD, said that the Government is treating the women of the region with disdain. Screening for breast cancer is grossly inadequate and women have to go to Dublin for radiotherapy, which results in great hardship and long waits.

Castlebar Property fetches over €1 million
The Irish Permanent Building situated on the corner of Main Street went for €1,080,000 at a public auction this week. It was purchased by local man, Mr Cyril Flynn. The two-storey property, which had been recently renovated, is situated in Castlebar’s retail hub. Mr Flynn is said to have no plans for the building.

Second Party Leader?
There is a very strong possibility that in a few weeks time the leaders of two of the main political parties in the country could be Mayo Men. Enda Kenny is already leader of the Fine Gael Party, having won the leadership battle after the general election disaster in June. Now Ballindine native Pat Rabbitte is campaigning to do likewise as the head of the Labour Party.
