New hearing on the gas terminal
The Oral Hearing into the planning application for the Corrib Gas field terminal at Ballinaboy in North Mayo is to be reopened by An Bord Pleanala. After the hearing last February, the planning board wrote to Enterprise Energy Ireland and raised concerns about health and safety, due to the terminal site’s proximity to residential areas. The new hearing, expected to be in Ballina next month, will deal with new information submitted by Enterprise Energy Ireland.
Publican facing further court action in Traveller Case
It looks likely that a Circuit Court decision to renew the licence of a publican at the centre of the recent blanket ban on members of the travelling community will be appealed. Westport publician Mr Chris Lavelle was found by Judge Mary Devins to have broken the law by imposing the ban in his premises but she ruled that he was of sufficient good character to hold the licence. Ms Comiskey who is a member of the Mayo Travellers’ Support Group said that the decision was “unjust” and that she “was going to take this case as far as possible”.
Nice ratified in the West
In Mayo, 24,647 voted Yes and 17,510 voted No, representing a rounded up 58% v 42% majority. The Mayo ‘No’ vote was the highest in Connaught and the second highest overall, after Dublin South Central at 18,048 No votes. The turnout in Mayo was 46.14% the second lowest in Connaught after Galway West at 45.22%.
