Erris Sludge Plant Controversy
Mayo County Council has determined that the former briquette factory at Geesala does not require planning permission to produce 'biomass briquettes' or biomass fertiliser in pellet form. The council has granted a permit for the drying of sewage sludge at the facility which has been closed for some time. A local action committee has lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanála and are holding a protest meeting in Teach Iorrais, Geesala on Monday 7th January.

Christmas Retail Boom
Retailers had a bumper Christmas in Mayo and the New Year sales appear to be going very well also spurred on by the euro changeover. Pundits are predicting a 14% increase in sales this Christmas with a national spend of £1.15Billion.

Ballinrobe Councillor calls for disbanding of An Bord Pleanála
Cllr Damien Ryan, FF, Claremorris called for the abolition of An Bord Pleanala and criticised An Taisce for their attitude to protecting the environment - when sons and daughters of farmers could not build on sites on land belonging to their parents. Blaming agriculture for pollution was a total farce too as good farming practice was being adhered to and proper nutrient management plans were in place, he claimed.
