7th January 2004

On this day items on the front page of www.castlebar.ie included a a review of 2003. We had a link to the Mars Rover photos - newly beamed down from the surface of the Red Planet. And, out of this world altogether, the famous kiss at the Westlife Wedding was photographed by Michael Donnelly.

In a week of unseasonably fine weather we recovered from our romantic exertions on Valentines Day. Our paper reviews included a political story that ran throughout the year - Beverley insists "I have done nothing improper".


25th March 2004

While Richard Clarke was dishing the dirt on GW Bush, here in Castlebar Celia Anderson told her tale as a hopeful author.

1st April 2004

The Playboy was in town and our report on the collapse of the smoking ban which had just recently been introduced was spotted very quickly as an April Fool's joke by some at least of the many bulletin board contributors.



20th May 2004

The first Irish Woman to stand on the top of Everest as Irish teams reaches the summit. Bungee Jumper DJ Mad Mick also made the front page photographed in mid-air! And what was that headline "Flynn Flung out" about?

Election Winners! Sean Bourke and Paddy McGuinness at the moment of their election the previous weekend. Michael Donnelly provided a full gallery of 27 photos from the Mayo counts at the TF.

17th June 2004

The Great Western Lakes were under discussion at a conference to be held on the Castlebar campus of GMIT. The break-up of Aer Rianta was the topic of a poll.


7th July 2004

Brian Friel's masterpiece 'Philadelphia Here I Come' played at the TF - 5th to 10th July. There was Sunshine and Salsa on Market Square. We also had action shots from the Mayo Galway Semi-Final.


The Hawk visited the new-look McHale Road. But there was controversy over its closure.

22nd August 2004

The first All-Ireland Semi-Final - against Fermanagh - a near thing indeed but won by Mayo a week later.

Lots of holiday snaps were uploaded or emailed to www.castlebar.ie in late August too.


12th September 2004

All-Ireland hurling final day as Mayo's biggest challenge approached.

McHale Road:
A nostalgic article from a member of one of the first families to live on McHale Road.


Dave Smith and friends took to the Bangor Trail in August and took some amazing photos of this most beautiful part of Mayo.

4th October 2004

Stewart Agnew - the next big thing on the Irish music scene - singer/songwriter performed at the Linenhall on Monday 4th October.

Gaeltacht 1960: Read this
wonderfully whimsical account of a youngster's stay in the Connemara Gaeltacht back in April 1960.


20th November 2004

The Carnival was in town and a protest movement was getting off the ground against the asbestos plant proposed for  Killala

31st December 2004

After the dreadful natural disaster in South Asia we supported the Tsunami Appeal - Goal, Trocaire, Unicef, Concern and the Irish Red Cross are all taking donations. Click for phone numbers and website contacts for all of these organisations.

Childhood Memories - Down memory lane - a special exhibition of childhood in the 1950s at the National Museum of Ireland, Country Life Turlough.
