22nd Sunday of the Year

For people involved in healthcare, there can be times when they wonder if anyone is healthy. Whatever about religious and clergy; statistics for dentists, nurses and doctors show rising rates of depression among their ranks. So, was it from compassion or fatigue that Jesus `sighed’ today? Still, he sowed sunlit hope and spoke possibility to those who were frail with infirmity and soul pain. Jesus is also `hands on’, not distant and removed. Using touch and spittle he touches what is broken with the Creator’s touch. While modern medical advances are wonderful, one downside is the loss of touch. First the stethoscope got between doctor and patient. Now, we have remote diagnosis, we get x-rayed, our body fluids get extracted and sent to labs and we get crammed into MRI tubes. But we are touched by few. God’s promise is of a world where infirmity is banished and barren land becomes fruitful (Isaiah), a world where all are equal, unlike the familiar scenario St. James (second reading) paints. Once at our baptism, someone touched our ears and lips in the name of Jesus and said to us Ephphatha (be opened). How have we fared? Has a hands-on God got a hands-on Christian to count on - in you?

LUMEN CHRISTI

There is a darkness within each one of us that needs to be dispelled by the light which Christ brings.
There is a darkness in our lives sometimes caused by deliberate and serious sin, sometimes by habit which is displeasing to God.
Sometimes, indeed quite often, that darkness is not caused by sin or bad habit, but is allowed by God to increase our longing for him, for his light and for his warmth.
Cardinal Basil Hume
