Rush Street and Frank Hall

Posted by Alan King on August 24, 2014 at 15:36:35:

Following this week’s successful ‘Bonamh Market & Heritage Day’ in Rush Street, it’s interesting to note that it took over two years to put proper controls on the markets which were held there in times past. In 1969, the local UDC after numerous complaints, decided to introduce bye-laws and regulations for that area of the town. The problem was that due to no regulations, the buying and selling of animals went on sometimes into the night and animals not sold were left in that area for very long periods of time before they were removed. It was stated at a meeting that ‘Jobbers’ who had not sold their cattle would remove them from the Fairgreen and bring them to the Rush Street area where they would be left for ages which resulted in excessive noise and the streets becoming filthy. Some householders complained that they had to wash down the front of their houses regularly following street fairs. After the council drafted Bye-laws, which included setting out time limits for the removal of animals, they were sent off to the Department of Local Government for approval. However, nothing was heard from the Department, even though the council sent off numerous letters and it wasn’t until two years later when the late Councillor Dick Morrin contacted Frank Hall of RTE’s ‘Newsbeat,’ who publicised the story. The Bye-Laws were immediately dispatched to Castlebar and arrived at the Town Clerk’s office the next day of business. It was one of the rare times Frank Hall got a positive mention in the chamber as ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’ had yet to air. Sin sceal eile.
