Castlebar's £2000 smell - 1959

Posted by Royal on April 19, 2005 at 17:30:59:

In light of the publicity surrounding the Factory in Athlone which was claimed to emit obnoxious smells,I wonder do people remember a similar case in Castlebar?
In the Summer of 1959,Mayo County Council erected a tar and bitumen storage plant up at the Railway Station for the cost of £7,500.It was described in newspaper reports as "beautiful" and looking like "the comfortable home of any big businessman".
However,it gave out a terrible offensive smell & became so bad that a resident, living nearby took legal proceedings against the Council and won.
The Council had to shut the plant & it's estimated that the cost of transfering all materials came to £2,ooo.
