Castlebar's 2000 smell - 1959

Posted by Royal on April 19, 2005 at 17:30:59:

In light of the publicity surrounding the Factory in Athlone which was claimed to emit obnoxious smells,I wonder do people remember a similar case in Castlebar?
In the Summer of 1959,Mayo County Council erected a tar and bitumen storage plant up at the Railway Station for the cost of 7,500.It was described in newspaper reports as "beautiful" and looking like "the comfortable home of any big businessman".
However,it gave out a terrible offensive smell & became so bad that a resident, living nearby took legal proceedings against the Council and won.
The Council had to shut the plant & it's estimated that the cost of transfering all materials came to 2,ooo.
