There were a number of old prisons in Castlebar. the earliest prior to 1785) was on the junction of Ellison Street and Castle Street- where Egan's jewellers is now.

The next jail built circa 1785 was on the Mall- now site of Motor Tax Office.George Robert Fitzgerald( the Fighting Fitzgerald )was hung from scaffolding here as it was being built. He was in fact incarcerated in jail at Ellison St.

The old Gaol as in picture was situated on the site of Mayo General Hospital- opposite T.F Royal Hotel. It was built in 1835 and used up to 1935.
