About 50/60 years ago Mayo County Council parked their steamrollers and caravans opposite Dr. Hynes' surgery on the Station Road. When the old jail on the Westport Road was being demolished a lot of the spoil was taken to McHale Park to build up the embankments. On the way to McHale Park, a very large stone fell off a horse cart and was located at the Station Road (probably opposite Pat Duane's house). It rested there for many years and almost ended up in a sewer trench. Luckily it was rescued and is now in the keeping of Brendan Halpin at his monumental stoneworks on Richard Street. It was known as the 'jail stone.'
