Prior to the building of Dunnes Stores, not too far from Sean Kilcoyne's slaughterhouse, there was a drain which was covered by very heavy gates. The gates were refurbished by Seamus Bourke, St. Patrick's Avenue, whose father, Jim Bourke, had a butcher shop on Ellison Street and killed his cattle at the bottom of Cavendish Lane. The gates were reputed to come from the jail on the Westport Road. Of course, this was the site of the old brewery and Cavendish Lane was at one time called Brewery Lane. I think the last owner of the brewery was a man named Gildea.
