My late uncle, Pake Mugan [1898-1993]of Cloonkeen, who was the last surviving member of the ill-fated ambush at Cloonkeen Bridge in May 1921 once told me that the old jail in Castlebar was in the region of where the hospital is now and that the low cut-stone wall which now encloses the memorial cross at Cloonkeen was built in about 1940 with stone from the then demolished jail
