In February 1969 The secondary teachers went on strike for the month and the schools were closed. The second day of the strike it snowed heavily all day.All the hills( Baynes Hill, Flannellys field, the Lawn and of course the hills at lake at the back of where St Geralds College now stands) around the town became improvised ski slopes for the duration of the strike with every kind of object being used to descend down the slopes. From morning to night hundreds of youngsters and some not so youngsters tried their skills on the slopes. There were stories of toboggans ending up in the lake or in the river at Baynes field and of car bonnets packed with passengers ending up against the wall of the Sacred Heart Home having jumped the wall at Flannellys field. Happy memories of happy days !!!!!!
