After the foundation of the state, a number of street names in Castlebar were changed. Spencer Street became Pearse Street; Ellison Street was changed to McBride Street and Newantrim Street (I think] was changed to Connolly Street. There may have been more changes. However, local people preferred the original names and the new street names never caught on. Liam Egan wrote an excellent history of the street names of Castlebar over twenty years ago and his articles were published in the Connnaught Telegraph. Incidentally, Ellison Street was named after Rev. Ellison, rector in Castlebar at the time of the 1798 Rising. He was visiting the Bishop of Killala, Dr. Stock at the time. Dr. Stock, it is said, was known as 'Twenty Days' Stock as he took a new bride just twenty days after the death of his first wife.
