Legal history was made thirty years ago this week,when for the first time ever in Mayo, women were selected to do jury service.
At Castlebar Circuit Court, five ladies were selected for the hearing of a dangerous driving case involving the death of a Castlebar man.The first female name drawn to serve on the jury was Honor Tracy from Achill Sound but she was excused after an objection from defending counsel.
The first Castlebar woman to sit was Kathleen Larkin, Carrownarlar, Castlebar.
In all 210 people were summoned to appear for jury service, at which fifty per cent were women.
