Appointment of County "Replivingers"

Posted by Royal on April 07, 2006 at 17:51:34:

Bet not too many have heard of the word "replivinger".It's a legal position which became obsolete in the 1920's and would be the eqivalent of a "sheriff" nowdays. He ( no women appointed ) would have to recover possession of goods, until a legal judgement was determined.A number of people would be appointed from the large towns in Mayo and work under the direction of the High Sheriff for County Mayo.
One of the last "Replivingers" for Castlebar was a Michael Gallagher, Courthouse, Castlebar.
