Knock airport was once described as been built "on a foggy, boggy hillside".Well,Knock may be foggy sometimes but it doesn't come close to the time Westport became enveloped in avery thick fog,on a day in September 1949.A newspaper article in the Western People at the time reported that the fog was so thick that the street lamps couldn't be seen. All traffic and movement even by foot, came to a standstill and it must have looked like a scene out of a sci-fi film the next day,to see all the roads around the town lined with abandoned cars.Workers in the factories who had to cycle home were stranded and a bus that attempted to drive out of the town towards Louisburgh, skidded and ended up on the Fairgreen.Thankfully, nobody got hurt during this period and the "fog story" even made the national newspapers, with it been described as bad as the fog in London. |
