Many southern(USA) people use the expression,"thank you Jesus" instead of God.I think its probably a matter of whether you are addressing "him"directly or saying "thank God" when you have good news.With reference to Iranians and Turks that I have heard using the expression"thanks God"I think they really meant thank God or thanks be to God because of what thay would say in the rest of the sentence.Sorry so long winded.
