Castlebar's Bog discovery

Posted by Royal on August 31, 2006 at 17:25:29:

In July, the discovery of an ancient manuscript(Psalter or Book of Psalms)in a bog in the South Midlands, was described by Dr.Pat Wallace,National Museum of Ireland Director, "as comparable to the Dead Sea Scrolls".
Well it wasn't the first item to be found in a bog.
In Castlebar,in 1977,a wooden bowl dating back to the Stone Age period, was descovered in a bog in Glenisland, by Pat Salmon from Chapel Street.
It was presented to the Principal at the time of St.Angela's National School, Castlebar, Sr.Ignatius by Pat's 10 year old daughter,Marie.
She explained at the time that her father had discovered a number of items, but nothing as good in condition as the bowl.
Sr.Ignatius stated that advice had been given on how to preserve the bowl and it would be put on display, which presumably it's still there.
