Wimpey ( with an E ) was and still is a large contractor in the UK, but there is no connection with the Wimpy fast food outlets. Wimpey was founded by George Wimpey who started with a stonemasons business in Hammersmith, West London in the 1800s. Castlebar has had a strong connection with Wimpey as the Company was managed by Walter Barrett from Breaffy in the 50s and 60s - which connection was beneficial to many Castelbar men seeking work in England during those despairing times for many in Ireland.
