A snáhaun is indeed a more gentle term. Ya might hear a grandad say ' Im here with two snáhauns' meaning grandchildren. The mother was strict more than rigid in her opinions. For her, and where we learned the usage, a cocky fella giving backchat or lip would instantly and with some irritation be labelled a snath-raw-hawn. Today Im sure another term would be used. The term could be extended to reflect badly on the fellas family. Once lableed there was no salvation from the term and it was remembered into the fellas manhood !
