I was told that the Brass Castle was where the men of the Barracks were entertained by the ladies of the night. It was the town side of Barracks Bridge. The Chatter House was up beside Cathal Duffy's Garage where folk were kept who were regarded as mentally ill before St. Mary's was built. When they had gathered enough they were brought by carriage to St. Brigid's in Ballinasloe. It was called the Chatter House because they babbled away.
