Over 100 people from four countries set off on the first day, which was opened by two Dutchmen from the Walking Festival in Nijmegan, Holland. Participants of the then named “Midsummer Walking Festival” were led out of Town by a military pipe band from Athlone, with 50 local teenagers acting as guides & courier. Besides the Walks, there was an impressive list of events taking place during the 4 days, such as having singer Tom Jones in the T.F., band recitals, raffles, competitions etc in the Mall, a Speaker’s Corner on the Mall each evening , a pub singing contest with the considerable prize of £100 & the main event, the roasting of an ox on an open-air spit in the Mall. This attracted huge crowds with 6 industrial gas heaters set up & then the meat distributed free to spectators, whilst bonfires & bands were playing nearby.
