They are not forgotten, I see, HJ. They served the same purpose for the Staball Gang in my time before all those streets you named existed. They provided a getaway to a Tom Sawyer-like (maybe Huck Finn-like)world where you were beyond the laws and the rules of the larger society for a while and only the gang rules applied.
